Where is the best place to hide a sex tape? On the second page of search results. Ranking on the first page of YouTube search results is just as important as ranking well on the first page of Google. YouTube first page statistics and click-through rates are hard to find, but Google first page statistics reveal the following:

  • On the first page, the first five results account for 67.60% of all clicks and results from six to ten account for 3.73%.
  • Page two and three get 5.59% of all clicks.

Although these statistics are dated, they highlight the importance of search placement. Also, organic search results are under attack and losing ground to paid ads, which intensifies the case to rank well.

Should you care about being on the first page? It depends. If you post videos daily to build a loyal following, ranking on the first page may not be mission critical. Many vloggers take that approach. I, however, am not a vlogger. I post videos infrequently and want my efforts to count. Ranking on page-one is vital, and I use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to position myself for success. Several of my videos garner the top search result, for example, Hootsuite vs. Buffer, Wealthfront vs. Betterment, and How to Make Money with Facebook Groups. Many of my other videos rank on page one. I focus on titles, descriptions, and tags to optimize my videos for search. I concentrate on thumbnail design and appeal to increase click-through rates.

Wealthfront vs Betterment YouTube

To rank well, you need a general understanding of SEO, YouTube SEO, and tools that can help. I will list several tools, and these two articles provide insights regarding video optimization and ranking factors.

  • Google Keyword Planner

YoutubeKeyword Planner is available through Google AdWords, an online advertising service. While it was created to support ad campaign planning and research, many people use it to search for keywords and see how a list of keywords might perform. You can find new keyword ideas for your videos that are relevant to your brand, product, service, and target audience. Keyword Planner will show you historical statistics such as search volume data and competitiveness for these keywords. Users can target keywords by geographical location, including countries, territories, regions, and cities. Furthermore, users can customize results by date, seasonal trends, and device.

  • Google Trends

Google Trends is an online search tool that allows the user to see how often specific keywords, subjects, and phrases have been queried over a specific period of time. It works by analyzing a portion of Google searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms entered, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over the same period. A search for a term will yield data on interest over time, country, and subregion. However, the valuable insights are located in the related queries section, which is downloadable. Related queries highlight top and rising searches, which is also useful for blog and vlog ideas.

Final Word

Many committed YouTubers use either TubeBuddy or vidIQ and one keyword tool. Google’s Keyword Planner is a popular choice, but it has many limitations. For example, it doesn’t provide precise average monthly search volume data, only min-max search volume. Alternatively, you can experiment with the other options I listed.
