Websites range in the millions and are essential to our professional and personal lives. Businesses typically use sites to market and sell goods and services. Individuals have websites for various reasons, such as blogging and marketing themselves. For example, chadtennant.com features my work, skills, education, and interests.

For a website to appear online, it needs hosting. Web hosting is a combination of files on a server, data processing, and workflows. While you can self-host a site, many people use hosting companies for convenience, affordability, technology, security, professional management, and more.

Web Hosting Plans

Hosting plans vary among companies, but offerings typically belong to one of these categories.

  • Shared hosting
  • VPS hosting
  • Dedicated hosting
  • Cloud hosting
  • Managed WordPress hosting
  • Ecommerce or WooCommerce Hosting

Products & Services

Naturally, web hosting companies sell hosting. They usually offer various plans and features for different needs and budgets. They might also provide and sell developer and collaboration tools, domain name registration, domain privacy, domain transfer, email hosting, premium support, SSL security certificates, third-party offers/deals, website builders, design services, and business apps.

Web Hosting Market

There are hundreds of hosting companies globally, with many operating privately. The Endurance International Group is publicly traded and owns many brands, including Bluehost, HostGator, Domain.com, and more. GoDaddy, Amazon (cloud), Google (cloud), and Microsoft (cloud) are also huge players in the market. However, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft target enterprise customers. For example, Airbnb uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its site.

Pricing

Hosting prices range across the board. It’s best to review a few providers and plans to understand pricing and the differences in features. For instance, SiteGround’s entry-level managed cloud hosting plan costs $80 monthly, whereas Hostinger costs less than $30. Obviously, you must review features and performance to make fair comparisons.

Best Web Hosting Affiliate Programs

Publishers want to promote the top affiliate programs because they can yield more commissions. Although other bloggers highlight “the best programs,” some of them cheat you with incomplete lists of five to ten affiliate programs. Instead, I want to give you plenty of options to help you reach your income targets. Also, I only list reputable companies that offer appealing commission rates, cookie durations, timely payments, and other benefits. I consider factors such as earnings per click (EPC), payout threshold, deep linking capabilities, and affiliate support.

Web hosting merchants typically use a cost per sale CPA. Many providers will increase commissions, beyond what is stated, for high volume affiliates. Web hosting plans can get expensive with high commission payments trailing behind. For that reason, many web hosting merchants offer high-ticket and high-paying affiliate programs.

Other Affiliate Programs

A2 Hosting

A2 Hosting offers web solutions for novices to expert developers. It has an affiliate program, but my experience with it was terrible and upsetting.

Commissions that I had generated sat idle for more than a year because the amount, $90, didn’t meet their $100 payout threshold. While most web hosting merchants set their payout thresholds below the commission for one sale, A2 Hosting sets it above to desperately hang onto affiliate earnings. That concept is something their revolving door of incompetent affiliate managers couldn’t comprehend or didn’t want to change to support affiliates. Suffice it to say, their confusing and dated website layout matches the potential of their affiliate program.

  • Commission rate: Up to $125
  • Cookie duration: 90 days
  • Affiliate software/network: Post Affiliate Pro

DreamHost

DreamHost helps bloggers, web designers, and entrepreneurs bring their dreams to life. It has an affiliate program, but its 97-day refund policy on shared hosting plans means affiliates must wait at least that long to get paid (a significant disadvantage). Secondly, DreamHost uses poorly rated and inefficient affiliate tracking software from Ambassador. It raises questions about who is managing (or mismanaging) the program.

  • Commission rate: Up to $200
  • Cookie duration: 30 days
  • Affiliate software/network: Ambassador

Flywheel

Flywheel helps creatives do their best work through a series of well-designed products and resources, including its namesake product, a delightful WordPress hosting platform, and Local by Flywheel, a fuss-free local development application. WP Engine acquired Flywheel in 2019. Flywheel has an in-house referral program.

  • Commission rate: Up to $500
  • Cookie duration: N/A
  • Affiliate software/network: In-house custom

Squarespace

Squarespace offers a website builder, hosting, domain names, ecommerce, galleries, templates, analytics, marketing tools, and scheduling. Squarespace is a laggard. While it’s well-established, it ranks behind WordPress, Weebly, Wix, and GoDaddy in website traffic and popularity (source: Alexa). Regarding ecommerce store software, it trails Shopify and BigCommerce by a lot. Finally, Squarespace has a low program acceptance rate.

  • Commission rate: Up to $200
  • Cookie duration: 45 days
  • Affiliate software/network: Impact

Wix

Wix is a cloud-based platform with millions of users worldwide. It makes it easy for everyone to create a beautiful, professional web presence. The Wix affiliate program uses in-house custom software and pays $100 per sale. Wix has improved its affiliate tracking software since I left the program. However, affiliate support is likely still a mess, and Wix has unfavorable policies, for example, “You need to generate a minimum of $300 (USD) in commission fees per month in order to continue participating in the Program.” You also must generate that amount to receive your first payment, which is ludicrous and asinine.

  • Commission rate: $100
  • Cookie duration: 30 days
  • Affiliate software/network: In-house custom

Yahoo Small Business

Yahoo Small Business has been helping businesses start and grow online for years, from online stores and websites to professional email and managing your brand across the internet. It offers inexpensive hosting, domains, and ecommerce solutions. Yahoo’s EPC results are low compared to others, and the brand is fading in the twilight of the 2001 dotcom crash.

  • Commission rate: 20%
  • Cookie duration: 45 days
  • Affiliate software/network: CJ Affiliate

Your Next Move

The best approach to making money with web hosting affiliate programs is to promote the company you use. In my case, that’s SiteGround and Hostinger. I’ve included them on my business tools page, and you’ll notice a SiteGround link at the bottom of all my pages (in the copyright section). Other promotional methods include blog posts, ad banners, email campaigns, and social media marketing.
